Clear answers to the questions we hear most often about the Life in the UK Test and the journey to citizenship.
Anyone aged 18 to 64 applying for naturalisation or settlement (ILR) must take the test unless they qualify for an exemption due to long-term illness, disability, or hold proof of passing previously.
Book through the official GOV.UK website only. Choose from 30+ test centres across the UK, pay the £50 fee, and select an available date at least three days in advance.
You must bring the same identity document you used when booking, such as a biometric residence permit, passport, or EU national ID card. Photocopies or expired documents are not accepted.
You can reschedule or cancel online up to three days before your test date without losing the fee. Missing the appointment counts as a failed attempt and requires a new booking.
The pass mark is 18 out of 24 questions (75%). Our simulator mirrors this threshold and encourages you to aim for at least 20 correct answers to maintain a safety margin.
You have 45 minutes to complete the multiple-choice exam. Most candidates finish within 20 minutes, but we recommend practising under full exam conditions to build confidence.
You must wait at least seven days before booking another attempt. There is no limit to the number of retakes, but you must pay the £50 fee each time.
Once you pass, you will receive a unique reference number. Keep it safe: the Home Office uses it to verify your result when you apply for settlement or citizenship.
